THORNY HEART contd.
“And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up
with it, and choked it.”
LUKE
8:7 (KJV)
Out
of all the hearts we’ve considered, this category of heart appears to be more
promising than the ones before it as they believed the word of God, made progress
with the word, but didn’t bring forth fruit to perfection. We discovered from
Jesus’ explanation that it was because they nursed the cares of this world in
their hearts.
It
is important for us to note that we are not to believe God’s word alongside nursing
the cares of this world. We are to cast
our cares on Jesus for he cares for us and hold on to God’s word until it
produces what it talks about.
Our
opening text tells us that the thorns grew up with the word. This means that as
they believed the word of God, their concern for earthly gratification
increased. Their cares could only have increased because their expectation of
the word took longer to manifest than they expected. They worried over when their needs will be met: in doing this they
terminated the process of believing. This further proves their motive for
serving God in the first place which is to have their needs met.
The
first solution to this state of heart would be for them to get their motive for
serving God straightened out: it should be to first please the father; and
scripture assures us that all that we seek we be added to us.
The
second solution would be for them to spend time studying the finished works of
God as contained in his promises towards us and his work on the cross of
Calvary. Only then will they be free from the cares of this world, as God has
already made provision for our needs. Be
not afraid; only believe!
