THE GRACE OF JESUS
“For you know the grace of our Lord
Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that
you through his poverty might be rich.”
2 Corinthians 8:9 (KJV)
The
grace of our Lord Jesus Christ is amongst the three communications of the God-head:
the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the
Spirit. We have chanted this doxology without paying attention to its
implication. I have discovered that the most-said words are the least
understood by its users.
Our
opening scripture gives us an idea of what the grace of our Lord Jesus is. To know
the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ we need to understand what made him poor. The
poverty of Jesus was an incidence that took place when he was on the cross of Calvary.
He wasn’t poor in the natural as he was a carpenter by profession, the bread
winner of his family, had wealthy disciples, and had wealthy women ministering
unto him. His poverty was as a result of the departure of the Spirit of God
from him when he fully bore the weight of the sin of humanity.
From
our understanding of the poverty of Jesus, we can understand what his richness
was: it was the supply of the Spirit in his life. There was no way Jesus could
have done the works he did without being strengthened by the indwelling
presence of the Holy Spirit, little wonder he didn’t begin ministry until he
was filled with the Spirit of God. The grace
of our Lord Jesus Christ is the strength of our Lord Jesus Christ and it is the
supply of the Spirit of God.
The
Holy Spirit was the Strength of Jesus on Earth and he is our Strength on earth.
In scripture, He is referred to as the Spirit of Grace, i.e. the Spirit that
has grace and imparts grace. Humans must learn to depend on the Holy Spirit to
live the life that pleases God. He is,
in the real sense our wealth.
Often
we tend to go about our lives and projects on human strength, and this cannot
sustain our lives and projects – except we embrace dark powers which will only
lead us to a sorrowful end. Scripture says that the arm of flesh shall fail
those who depend on it.
Believe in Jesus Christ to receive his
grace; engage in heartfelt prayers to grow in his grace; study the word to be
established in his grace.
CONFESSION
Father I thank you for revealing your grace to me
through your son Jesus. I believe in him and ask for an abundant supply of the
Spirit in my life.
