TRUE WORSHIP

“But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
            John 4: 23-24 (KJV)

In our previous post I stated that worship has shifted from an outward expression to an inward impression. We will now take a closer look at Jesus’ statement in our opening scripture to grasp a richer understanding of worship.

True worship is defined by Jesus as one that is done in spirit and in truth: this is because he had earlier stated that God is a Spirit. This means that God is not a physical reality but a spiritual reality: so the worship of Him can only be judged accurate when done in spirit.
To worship God in spirit is to worship God with the heart. What God requires of us is heart-devotion and not act-devotion. While act-devotion is permissible – when done within the boundaries of scriptural tenants – it must be offered with heart-devotion.

Heart-devotion is one that places emphasis on our thoughts, feelings, and desires towards God. We need to constantly ensure that these three expressions of our heart are involved in our relationship with God – this is true worship.

To worship God in truth is to worship him in sincerity. How many times have we engaged in act-devotions without meaning them? Our worship of God must be from a heart that means every thought, feeling and desire that it has for God.

Jesus said that the Father seeks true worshippers: this explains the reason God loved David. He shifted worship from an outward expression to an inward impression. David said, “For you desire not sacrifice; else would I give it: you delight not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.” It is best we embraced true worship as no longer does our Father accept physical worship; he delights in spiritual worship.

PRAYER
Dear father, I thank you for the call to worship you, I repent from false worship and decide to engage my heart in the worship of you..
